How do I get started with NASM?

Getting started with NASM begins with choosing a certification — NASM-CPT is the most common entry point, with specializations available to build upon. You can purchase online on the NASM-CPT page, get access to your course materials immediately, and study at your own pace working toward passing your exam. No prior fitness industry experience is required to begin.

What certifications does NASM offer?

NASM's foundational certification is the Certified Personal Trainer (NASM-CPT), an NCCA-accredited certification built on NASM's Optimum Performance Training (OPT™) model. From there, you can add specializations and certificates including:

What is the NASM Certified Personal Trainer (NASM-CPT)?

The NASM Certified Personal Trainer (NASM-CPT) is an NCCA-accredited professional certification for those who want to coach fitness clients. It prepares you to assess clients, design evidence-based programs, and coach real results using NASM's OPT Model. NCCA-accredited certifications are what most major gyms and health clubs require or prefer. The National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) is a nationally recognized third party agency that accredits certification programs which are able to meet and comply with its standards.

What is the OPT Model?

The Optimum Performance Training® (OPT™) Model is NASM’s proprietary, evidence-based framework for program design. It progresses clients through phases to reduce movement dysfunction and improve performance, giving you a concrete method to follow rather than a loose set of exercises. It is a widely recognized training model in commercial fitness.

What are the requirements to get started with the CPT program?

A high-school diploma or GED is required for the NASM-CPT program, and a current CPR/AED certification is required before you take the NASM-CPT exam. No prior fitness certification or college degree is required to begin. The program is self-paced and fully online, so you can start right away and study around existing responsibilities.

Do I need a degree or experience?

No. You don't need a college degree or any prior fitness experience to begin the NASM-CPTprogram — it's designed for people entering the industry for the first time. The only prerequisites are a high-school diploma or GED and a current CPR/AED certification before you sit for your exam. Because the course is self-paced and fully online, many candidates start while working another job or changing careers.

How much do NASM Certified Personal Trainers (NASM-CPT) make?

The NASM-CPT qualifies you to work as a personal trainer in gyms, studios, or independently. In the 2026 State of the Personal Trainer Survey (N = 1,133, ±2.9%, 95% confidence), Certified Personal Trainers reported earning 22% more than the industry average, with new personal trainers averaging $48 an hour. View the full report.

What can I do with an NASM-CPT certification?

An NASM-CPT qualifies you to train clients one-on-one or in small groups at a gym, studio, or corporate wellness program, or to build an independent or online training business. Stacking specializations can put you on the pathway to higher-demand, higher-paying opportunities — for example, corrective exercise for clients recovering from injury, performance training for athletes, or nutrition coaching for clients who want dietary support alongside their workouts.

Does NASM help me find a job or clients?

No. While NASM does not help you find a job or clients, we do offer programs that you can use to find yourself a job or gain experience.  NASM's Job Guarantee (included with the Premium Self-Study and All-Inclusive CPT packages) guarantees you a job within 90 days of passing the NASM-CPT exam, or the cost of the Job Guarantee is refunded. Certified professionals also get access to the NASM Job Board, and — with the CPT All-Inclusive package — the Gymternship, an 80-hour hands-on experience with real clients at a partner facility. Terms and conditions apply.

What career opportunities can I get from the NASM-CPT certification?

NASM-certified professionals work as personal trainers in commercial and boutique gyms, run independent or online coaching businesses, work in corporate wellness, or move into specialized roles like corrective exercise, sports performance, or nutrition coaching. NASM credentials are also represented across professional sports — NASM-credentialed professionals are on staff for all NFL, NBA, MLS and MLB teams, and the majority of NHL teams.

The NASM-CPT Exam

How is the NASM-CPT exam structured?

The NASM-CPT, NCCA-accredited exam, is closed-book and proctored by PSI, taken online or in person. It has 120 questions (100 scored plus 20 unscored pretest items), a two-hour limit, and a scaled passing score of 70. You have 180 days from purchase to take the exam. The course content spans from client assessment and program design to behavioral coaching.

Can I take the NASM-CPT exam at home?

The NASM-CPT, NCCA-accredited exam, is proctored by PSI and can be taken online or in person.

How long do I have to take the NASM-CPT exam after I have purchased?

You have 180 days from your date of purchase to sit for your NASM-CPT exam.. For other NASM exams, for credentials such as NASM CWC, CNC, CES, and PES, you have 365 days from the date of purchase to pass your exam. If you need more time, extensions are available for a fee — that extension fee is waived automatically if you have an active NASM OneTM membership.

Can I just take the NASM-CPT exam without buying the course?

Yes — if you meet the eligibility requirements (high school diploma or equivalent, current CPR/AED certification) for the NCCA-accredited NASM-CPT, you can purchase only the exam without buying the full self-study program. Note that purchasing NASM's prep materials is optional and doesn't guarantee a passing score either way. You can purchase the exam only here.

What happens if I fail the NASM-CPT exam?

You can retake it. After a first failed attempt, you can retest after a 1-week wait; after a second failure, the wait is 30 days; any attempt after that requires a 1-year wait. A retest typically costs $199 unless it's included in your package (CPT Premium Self-Study and CPT All-Inclusive include a retest) or waived through an active NASM One membership.

What's the pass rate for the NASM-CPT exam?

Roughly 85% of candidates pass the NASM-CPT exam on their first attempt, based on NASM's most recently reported exam data (2025). That's among the higher first-attempt pass rates for NCCA-accredited personal trainer certifications.

How hard is the exam?

The NASM-CPT exam is considered one of the more rigorous personal trainer exams because it covers a broad range of material — anatomy, kinesiology, program design, and the OPT model — in a proctored, timed, closed-book format (120 questions, 20 of which are unscored research items, in a 2-hour window, with a passing scaled score of 70). It has an 85% pass rate, but how hard it feels depends heavily on how much you study; NASM's self-paced program, practice exams, and study coaches are built specifically to prepare you for it.

Cost, Payment & Financial Aid

Navigate Back to Top

How much does the NASM certification cost?

The NASM-CPT pricing depends on which package you choose — study materials, practice exams, and continuing education all shift the total, and NASM regularly runs promotional pricing on top of that. Every package includes NCCA-accredited exam access, and higher tiers add practice tools built to boost your pass rate. Current pricing and package comparisons are always up to date on the NASM-CPT page, since that's where any active offer applies automatically.

Do you hold my certification until I'm done paying?

No. You can complete your coursework, pass your exam, and start working as a certified professional while you're still making payments on a financing plan — you don't have to pay off the full balance first. You do need to stay current on your payments to remain in good standing, since falling more than 90 days behind can affect your certification status and your ability to recertify later.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes. NASM offers 0% interest financing on most certifications and bundles, with a minimum down payment of $49 and a choice of 4, 12, or 17 monthly installments. Your down payment and number of installments determine your fixed monthly payment, which doesn't change once you've selected it.

What if I want to put down more than $49?

You can put down more than the $49 minimum at checkout, and you can also make extra payments toward your balance at any time after enrolling. Extra payments reduce your remaining principal and shorten how long you're paying, though they won't change your fixed monthly installment amount unless you pay the plan off in full.

Do you offer financial aid?

NASM doesn't offer traditional need-based financial aid the way a college does, but there are several ways to lower your cost: 0% interest payment plans, ongoing promotional discounts and bundle pricing, a 25% military discount (plus up to $599 in potential GI Bill exam-fee reimbursement) for service members and their dependents, and periodic scholarship programs run with partner organizations. A Program Advisor can walk you through what's currently available.

Does NASM offer a career consultation?

Yes. An NASM Advisor can help you compare your product options, understand the differences, and identify the path that aligns best with your career goals.

Can I customize any of the bundles?

Yes. NASM's bundles are a starting point, not a fixed menu — a Program Advisor can help you combine certifications and specializations, add or remove features like the Job Guarantee or Gymternship, and structure a payment plan around your specific goals and budget.

Requirements, Scope & Recertification

Navigate Back to Top

Do I have to get a certification to train clients?

It depends on where you want to work: most U.S. states don't legally require a license to train clients, but nearly all commercial gyms, insurers, and corporate wellness employers require an NCCA-accredited certification like the NASM-CPT before they'll hire you or provide liability coverage. In practice, an accredited certification is the standard entry ticket into the profession even where it isn't legally mandated.

How long does the course take?

The NASM-CPT program is self-paced and fully online, and many candidates complete it in 4 to 6 weeks studying about 10–15 hours per week. You have up to 180 days from enrollment to take your exam, so you can move faster or slower depending on your schedule.

Can I write meal plans as a Certified Nutrition Coach (CNC)?

No.The NASM Certified Nutrition Coach (CNC) credential is a coaching credential, not a clinical one, so it doesn't authorize you to prescribe specific meal plans or individualized daily menus. Within your scope, you can evaluate a client's current eating patterns, give general, evidence-based nutrition guidance, discuss supplement categories (without prescribing dosages), and coach clients through sustainable behavior change. Requests for medically tailored meal plans or treatment of a diagnosed condition should be referred to a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).

Do I have to recertify my NASM certification and what does that involve?

Yes. The NASM-CPT must be renewed every two years. Renewal requires earning 2.0 continuing education units (CEUs, about 20 contact hours total), 0.1 of which comes from maintaining a current CPR/AED certification, plus completing NASM's recertification application. Specializations and other credentials generally follow a similar CEU-based renewal cycle, though specifics can vary by credential — an active NASM One membership waives recertification and renewal fees. To learn more about the recertification or renewal process for your NASM credentials, please visit NASM Recertification and Renewal.

NASM vs. Other Certifications

What's the difference between NASM and ISSA?

The biggest difference is accreditation and exam format. The NASM-CPT exam is NCCA-accredited , proctored, timed, and closed-book, with roughly an 85% first-attempt pass rate. ISSA's standard CPT exam is open-book, untimed, and not itself NCCA-accredited — ISSA offers a separate NCCA-accredited exam pathway through its NCCPT subsidiary, but relatively few candidates complete that additional exam. Because most commercial gyms and employers look for NCCA-accredited credentials when hiring, that distinction is often the deciding factor for candidates competing for a position.

What's the difference between NASM and ACE?

Both NASM and ACE are NCCA-accredited, so — unlike some comparisons — accreditation itself isn't the main dividing line. The bigger differences are training model and exam pathway. The NASM-CPT is built on the Optimum Performance Training (OPT™) model, with a strong emphasis on biomechanics, movement assessment, corrective exercise, and performance training. ACE is built on its Integrated Fitness Training (IFT®) model, which centers on behavior change and client-centered coaching — a common fit for trainers focused on general-population and lifestyle clients.

One thing to verify when comparing: ACE's default, included exam is a non-proctored, open-book certificate that is not itself NCCA-accredited, while ACE's NCCA-accredited Certified Personal Trainer exam is a separate proctored option — so check which credential a given package includes. The NASM-CPT exam is NCCA-accredited directly, proctored, timed, and closed-book, with roughly an 85% first-attempt pass rate.
