How do the exams work?
Certified Personal Trainer
For your Personal Trainer Certification, you have the choice between two exams--a non-proctored Certificate exam, and a proctored NCCA-Accredited Certification exam. Here are some of the major differences between the two:
The non-proctored, online-only exam contains 100 questions that must be answered within 3 hours. This exam is open-book, meaning you can refer to your study materials.
The proctored, NCCA-Accredited exam contains 120 questions that must be answered within 2 hours. This exam is closed-book, so you cannot refer to your study materials.
The choice of exam is up to you and in most cases simply depends on what your employer requires.
You will have 180 days from the date of registration to take either of the exam options. An extension for the exam can be purchased by contacting NASM Member Services at 1-800-460-6276.
Certified Wellness Coach
For Certified Wellness Coach, the exam is administered online within your customer portal. There are 100 multiple-choice questions and you'll have 120 minutes to complete it. A score of 70% or better is required to pass.
You have 365 days from the date of purchase to complete your exam. If you need an extension or a retest, you can purchase one by calling Member Services at 1-800-460-6276.
What if I do not pass the exams?
Certified Personal Trainer
For the Certified Personal Trainer program, your retest options are as follows:
The non-proctored exam includes three attempts to pass. After that, you can purchase additional retests from NASM Member Services at 1-800-460-6276.
The proctored, NCCA-accredited exam includes 1 attempt to pass. If the first attempt is unsuccessful, the NCCA requires you to complete a Retest Wait Period before you can take the test again.
If you fail to pass your exam on the first attempt, the Retest Wait Period is 1 week.
If you fail to pass your exam on the second attempt, the Retest Wait Period is 30 days.
If you fail to pass your exam on the third attempt or more, the Retest Wait Period is 1 year.
After the Retest Wait Period has passed, you can purchase a retest by calling NASM Member Services at 1-800-460-6276.
Certified Wellness Coach
