Understanding the Most Common Rate of Perceived Exertion Scales
There are two primary Rate of Perceived Exertion scales fitness professionals should recognize.
The Borg Scale
The original Borg Scale ranges from 6 to 20 and was designed so ratings roughly correspond with heart rate. For example, an RPE of 13 may align with a heart rate near 130 beats per minute.
While the Borg Scale remains common in clinical and research settings, it is less frequently used in everyday fitness coaching.
The Modified 0 to 10 Scale
The modified Rate of Perceived Exertion scale is the version most personal trainers use with clients because it is simple and intuitive.
Clients can quickly understand and apply this scale, so it has become a practical coaching tool across resistance training, cardiovascular training, and group fitness environments:
- 0 = Complete rest.
- 5 to 6 = Moderate effort that allows full conversation.

Power Training
Higher-intensity power and peak-strength efforts often fall within:
- RPE 8 to 9.
True maximal effort should be used sparingly and only when appropriate for the client's goals, experience level, and training status.
Using Rate of Perceived Exertion for Cardiorespiratory Training
Rate of Perceived Exertion is equally valuable for cardiovascular programming.
A steady-state aerobic session may remain around:
- RPE 4 to 5.
An interval workout may include:
- RPE 3 recovery periods.
- RPE 8 work intervals.
