Training rarely happens under perfect conditions. A client's sleep, stress, nutrition, and recovery can significantly affect how hard a workout feels on any given day, even when the program stays the same.
That's where the Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) becomes valuable. Rather than relying solely on prescribed loads, paces, or heart-rate targets, Rate of Perceived Exertion helps personal trainers adjust intensity based on the client's readiness and perceived effort. The result is more individualized programming, better autoregulation, and a more appropriate training stimulus from session to session.

Understanding the Most Common Rate of Perceived Exertion Scales

There are two primary Rate of Perceived Exertion scales fitness professionals should recognize.

The Borg Scale

The original Borg Scale ranges from 6 to 20 and was designed so ratings roughly correspond with heart rate. For example, an RPE of 13 may align with a heart rate near 130 beats per minute.

While the Borg Scale remains common in clinical and research settings, it is less frequently used in everyday fitness coaching.

The Modified 0 to 10 Scale

The modified Rate of Perceived Exertion scale is the version most personal trainers use with clients because it is simple and intuitive.
