Age Requirement

Candidates must be at least 18 years old to sit for the NASM-CPT exam. You may begin the program before turning 18, but you must meet the age requirement before taking the certification exam.

Education Requirement

NASM-CPT requires a high school diploma or GED. No college degree or post-secondary education is required. This makes NASM-CPT accessible to candidates at any stage of their educational background.

A degree in exercise science, kinesiology, or a related field can accelerate your understanding of the program content. It is not a prerequisite and does not affect your eligibility to begin the program or sit for the exam.

CPR/AED Certification

A current CPR/AED certification from an approved provider is required before you can sit for the NASM-CPT exam.

Approved providers include the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, American Safety and Health Institute, St. John Ambulance, Emergency Care & Safety Institute or Emergency Medical Technician. NASM also offers a CPR/AED course powered by ASTI. This exam features 25 questions, and you have unlimited exam attempts.

CPR/AED certifications typically expire every two years. Make sure yours is current at the time you sit for the NASM-CPT exam as well as when you renew your NASM-CPT credential.

What You Do Not Need

No college degree is required. No prior personal trainer certification or fitness credential is required. No professional experience in a gym or fitness setting is required. NASM-CPT program is designed to build your foundation from the ground up, covering exercise science, program design, client assessment, and coaching methodology.

How Is NASM-CPT Different from Other Certifications?

NASM Certified Personal Trainers earn 22% more than the industry average across both self-employed and gym-employed tracks. The Optimum Performance Training Model™ (OPT™), a systematic, evidence-based framework, offers a straightforward approach to designing customized exercise programs.

NASM content is self-paced and mobile-friendly, with interactive learning tools that include 3D anatomy animations, 200+ instructional videos, knowledge checks, and an AI study assistant available in select programs. Content is developed by subject matter experts across disciplines such as psychology, nutrition, physiology, physical therapy, and strength and conditioning, and reviewed with oversight from a Scientific Advisory Board.

NASM’s CPT program also draws on 1,223 scholarly references from peer-reviewed and academic sources. Materials are authored by 33 contributors, including 18 with doctoral degrees (PhD or EdD), with additional review processes in place to support accuracy and real-world application.

The Exam: What Happens After You Meet the Requirements

Once you meet the prerequisites, the path to the NASM-CPT is fully online and self-paced.

Once credentialed, NASM-CPT requires renewal every two years with 2.0 CEUs. A NASM One™ membership waives the recertification and renewal fee and provides access to continuing education courses in the CEU Library.

Building on Your NASM-CPT

NASM-CPT is the starting point, not the ceiling. Once certified, NASM specializations allow you to expand your expertise and earning potential in specific directions—corrective exercise, athletic performance, nutrition coaching, senior fitness, behavior change, and more.

According to NASM's 2026 State of the Personal Trainer Survey, which surveyed 1,133 active personal trainers, those holding at least one NASM specialization earn between 16% and 46% more than personal trainers without one. The data reflects what most experienced trainers already know: the more you invest in your expertise, the more value you bring to every client you work with.
