If you're thinking about becoming a personal trainer, one of the first questions you'll probably ask is: How much does NASM certification cost?

It's an important question, but the answer isn't as simple as a single dollar amount. NASM offers several study package options with different levels of support, learning resources, and career preparation, so your total investment depends on the experience you want and the resources you need to feel prepared for the Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) exam.

What the Cost of NASM Certification Actually Covers

When you’re comparing personal trainer certifications and their prices, it's easy to focus only on the number listed on the checkout page. But it's equally important to understand what exactly you're getting for that investment. Most NASM-CPT packages include several components that work together to prepare you for both the certification exam and your future career.

Comprehensive Study Resources

At the core of every package is access to NASM's Optimum Performance Training™  (OPT™ ) Model and the rest of NASM’s educational programming including:

Digital Learning Platform

Rather than relying solely on a textbook, NASM provides an online learning experience that many learners find more engaging. Depending on your package, you may receive:

Practice Exams and Quizzes

Practice tests help you become comfortable with question formats while identifying topics that need additional review. All NASM study packages include some degree of practice exams, chapter quizzes, and exam readiness assessments.

Certification Exam

The certification exam is included in the price of all study packages.

Career Preparation Resources

Some packages include additional career support designed to help you transition from student to working personal trainer. Depending on the package, these may include resources such as:

NASM Study Package Options

NASM currently offers four Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) packages, each designed for a different learning style and career goal. Every package includes the core NASM-CPT learning program and prepares you for the same NCCA-accredited certification exam. The difference is the level of support, career resources, and additional credentials included.

CPT Self-Study

The CPT Self-Study package is the most budget-friendly option and is ideal for independent learners who are comfortable studying at their own pace.

The course is 100% online and self-paced, allowing you to fit your studies around work, school, or family commitments. Along with the digital course materials, you'll receive practice quizzes, practice exams, instructional videos, and access to the NASM EDGE app, which includes flashcards and practice questions to help reinforce key concepts. The package also includes a learner orientation to help you get started and make the most of the course platform.

This option is a good fit if you're self-motivated, have strong study habits, and don't anticipate needing additional academic support.

CPT Premium Self-Study

The CPT Premium Self-Study package builds on the Self-Study option by adding personalized guidance throughout your certification journey.

In addition to everything included in the Self-Study package, you'll have unlimited access to NASM Study Support Coaches who can answer course-related questions and help you stay on track. Premium Self-Study also includes NASM's Job Guarantee, which guarantees you'll secure a qualifying personal training job within 90 days of passing your CPT exam or receive a refund of the Job Guarantee cost, subject to program terms and conditions.

This package is well suited for career changers or anyone who values additional accountability while preparing for the exam.

CPT Essentials Bundle

The CPT Essentials Bundle is designed for aspiring personal trainers who want to begin building specialized skills before they start working with clients.

Along with everything included in Premium Self-Study, this bundle adds three valuable career-building resources:

For students who know they want to coach both exercise and nutrition, this bundle offers a better value than purchasing these courses separately.

CPT Exclusive Bundle

The CPT Exclusive Bundle is NASM's most comprehensive option and is intended for aspiring personal trainers who want the broadest collection of learning and career resources from the start.

It includes everything in the Essentials Bundle—including the Certified Nutrition Coach course, Practical Skills Workshop, CPR/AED certification, unlimited Study Support Coach access, and the Job Guarantee—as well as the Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES) course.

Which Package Should You Choose?

The right package depends on your experience, learning style, and career goals. No matter which package you select, you'll prepare for the same nationally recognized NASM Certified Personal Trainer credential. The additional investment simply provides more support, expanded learning, and extra tools to help launch your career successfully.

Additional Costs to Consider

Certification is the first (and usually largest) expense, but it isn't the only one. Budgeting for a few additional costs now can prevent surprises later.

CPR/AED Certification

To become a certified personal trainer, you'll need a current CPR/AED certification from an approved provider. Course costs vary depending on the organization and whether you complete training in person or through a blended learning format. If you don't already hold this certification, be sure to include it in your overall budget. Some NASM packages include this course, so double-check before signing up for it separately.

Recertification

Professional certifications aren't designed to last forever. NASM requires Certified Personal Trainers to recertify on a regular schedule to ensure they stay current with evolving research and best practices.

Recertification typically involves completing continuing education credits (CEUs), maintaining your CPR/AED certification, and paying a recertification fee. To help offset costs, consider joining NASM ONE, which gives you access to hundreds of CEUs, discounts on specializations, and more for $35/month.

Continuing Education

Many personal trainers choose to pursue specialized certifications after earning their CPT credential. While these certifications involve additional costs, they can expand your expertise, help you serve more clients, and potentially increase your earning potential.

Some of NASM’s most popular specialization courses include:

Professional Liability Insurance

Many employers provide liability coverage, but independent personal trainers often purchase their own professional liability insurance. Policies are generally $20 to $50 per month, depending on the type of coverage you desire. This provides important financial protection when working with clients.

Business Expenses

If you eventually become self-employed, you may invest in marketing, website development, scheduling software, business insurance (separate from professional liability insurance), training equipment, or even a facility rental. These expenses aren't required to earn your certification, but they're worth factoring in if entrepreneurship is one of your long-term goals.

Payment and Financing Options

Paying for professional learning upfront isn't realistic for everyone. Fortunately, NASM offers options that can make certification more accessible.

Monthly Payment Plans

One of the most popular options is financing through monthly installment plans.

Instead of paying the full amount at checkout, eligible students can divide the cost into manageable monthly payments. This allows many aspiring personal trainers to begin studying immediately without waiting until they've saved the full purchase price.

Promotional Pricing

NASM regularly offers promotions throughout the year. Seasonal sales, holiday discounts, and limited-time offers can significantly reduce the total cost of certification. If your timeline is flexible, watching for promotions may help you save money.

Employer Reimbursement

If you already work in the fitness industry, ask whether your employer offers education reimbursement. Some gyms and health clubs help cover certification costs, particularly if they plan to hire you as a personal trainer after certification.

Is the Cost of NASM Certification Worth It?

Try not to look at the cost of certification only as an expense. It's an investment in knowledge, professional credibility, and future earning potential.

Many commercial gyms, health clubs, corporate wellness programs, and online coaching companies either require or strongly prefer candidates with an NCCA-accredited certification.

Holding a respected credential can make your resume more competitive during the hiring process. Learning exercise science, assessment techniques, programming principles, and coaching strategies gives you the foundation to work safely and effectively with clients.

Many newly Certified Personal Trainers begin earning income soon after certification. Even working part time, it's often possible to recover the cost of certification after training only a handful of clients for several weeks. As your experience grows, your income potential grows alongside it.

Becoming certified also supports lifelong learning. Fitness science continues to evolve, and certification introduces you to evidence-based coaching while encouraging ongoing education throughout your career. The most successful personal trainers never stop learning, and earning your CPT is the first step in that journey.
