The NASM OPT™ Model: A Trainer's Guide to Programming Clients
The OPT™ model is the backbone of NASM programming. Here is how trainers use its phases to take any client from stability to peak performance, systematically.

Ask an experienced NASM-Certified Trainer how they decide what a client does on day one, and the answer traces back to one framework: the Optimum Performance Training™ (OPT™) Model. It's the systematic backbone that turns assessment findings into a progressive plan, taking clients from foundational stability all the way to peak performance.

Here's how the OPT model is structured, what each phase accomplishes, and how to apply it, starting where nearly everyone should: with stabilization endurance.

What the OPT Model Is

The OPT model is NASM's proprietary training system, a periodized framework organized into three levels, Stabilization, Strength, and Power, that progress logically from building a foundation to expressing high-level performance. It gives trainers a repeatable structure for programming any client toward any goal.

Its core premise is sequencing: capabilities are built in an order that prepares the body for what comes next, so that strength is layered onto stability and power onto strength. This is what separates systematic programming from random workout selection.

The Three Levels and Five Phases

The model comprises five phases across the three levels. Stabilization Level holds Phase 1 (Stabilization Endurance). The Strength Level spans Phase 2 (Strength Endurance), Phase 3 (Hypertrophy), and Phase 4 (Maximal Strength). The Power Level is Phase 5 (Power).

Clients move through the phases according to their goals and readiness, and programs often cycle between phases over time rather than marching one-way to Phase 5. A general-population client might spend most of their training life across Phases 1 through 3, revisiting stabilization work regularly.

Why Stabilization Comes First

Phase 1, Stabilization Endurance, is where most clients should begin, and it's the phase busy trainers are most tempted to skip. Its job is to develop optimal movement patterns, improve muscular and core/joint stability, and build the postural control and connective-tissue readiness that heavier training later depends on.

Skipping it is like loading strength onto dysfunction, the compensations revealed in a client's overhead squat don't fix themselves under a heavier bar. Stabilization work, guided by assessment, is what makes the later phases both safer and more productive.

Programming Phase 1 in Practice

Stabilization-phase training has a recognizable prescription: higher repetitions with controlled tempos and proprioceptively enriched (less stable) conditions to challenge stability.

Progressing Through the Phases

As clients master stability, programming advances: Strength Endurance (Phase 2) pairs stable strength work with stabilization movements; Hypertrophy (Phase 3) drives muscle growth with higher volume; Maximal Strength (Phase 4) develops peak force with heavier loads; and Power (Phase 5) trains rate of force through explosive and plyometric work.

Progression is driven by the client's goals, readiness, and re-assessment, not a fixed calendar. Many clients benefit from periodized cycling among phases across a training year, which keeps adaptation fresh and matches training to changing goals and seasons.

Applying It to Real Clients

In practice, the OPT model connects everything a professional trainer does: the assessment identifies the starting point and corrective needs, the appropriate phase sets the acute variables (reps, sets, tempo, rest, intensity), and re-assessment guides progression. Two clients with different goals and movement quality can both be served by the same coherent system.

The result is programming you can explain and defend, to clients and to yourself. For trainers who want to master it, the OPT model is core to NASM's Certified Personal Trainer curriculum and the foundation the specializations build upon.
