Lactic Acid and Lactate: What Trainers Should Actually Tell Clients
Almost everything clients believe about lactic acid is outdated. Here is the current physiology, and how trainers can explain the burn accurately.

"It's the lactic acid," a client says, blaming it for the burn mid-set and the soreness two days later. Both claims are myths, and clearing them up is a small masterclass in the kind of evidence-based coaching that builds client trust. The physiology has moved on; a good trainer's explanations should too.

Here's the current understanding of lactate and the training burn, what it does and doesn't cause, and how to turn a common misconception into useful client education and smarter conditioning.

Correcting the Big Myths First

Two beliefs need retiring. First, lactate does not cause the delayed muscle soreness clients feel one to two days after training, that DOMS comes from muscle micro-damage and the repair process, and lactate clears from the blood within roughly an hour of exercise, long before soreness peaks.

Second, lactate is not a metabolic waste product or the villain of fatigue. Modern physiology recognizes lactate as a valuable fuel the body actively produces and reuses. Simply updating these two points already puts a trainer ahead of most gym-floor lore.

What's Really Happening During the Burn

During intense effort, when energy demand outpaces what aerobic metabolism can supply, the body relies more heavily on anaerobic glycolysis, and lactate production rises. The burning sensation clients feel is associated with the accumulation of hydrogen ions and the resulting drop in muscle pH, along with other metabolites, not lactate itself 'burning' the muscle.

In other words, lactate is more of a bystander (and a fuel) than a culprit. The burn is a signal of intense anaerobic work and rising acidity, a normal, temporary, and trainable response.

Lactate as Fuel and Signal

Lactate is shuttled between muscle fibers, to the heart, and to the liver, where it's used for energy or converted back toward glucose. Far from being a dead end, it's part of how the body distributes and recycles energy during and after exercise.

It's also a useful physiological signal. The point at which lactate begins accumulating faster than it's cleared, often called the lactate threshold, is a meaningful marker of conditioning, and one trainers can influence directly through programming.

Training the Lactate Threshold

The practical payoff: endurance and conditioning improve when a client can work at higher intensities before lactate accumulates faster than it clears. That threshold is trainable, which is where MET-style intensity language and RPE become useful coaching tools.

Managing the Burn and Recovery

Coach clients that the burn is temporary and safe in normal training: an active cooldown supports circulation and a return to baseline, and the sensation subsides quickly once intensity drops. There's no need to fear it, or to blame it for next-day soreness.

For DOMS itself, the honest guidance is unglamorous: gradual progression to avoid overreaching, adequate sleep and nutrition, light movement, and time. Framing recovery around fundamentals rather than lactate-flushing gimmicks keeps clients focused on what works.

Why Getting This Right Matters

Accurate physiology isn't pedantry, it changes behavior. A client who understands the burn is a normal, trainable response is less likely to fear intensity or quit a set prematurely, and one who knows lactate doesn't cause soreness stops chasing pointless 'flush' remedies.

As always, keep the scope line in view: normal training burn and soreness are expected, but sharp pain during exercise, or soreness that's severe, persistent, or accompanied by significant swelling or dark urine, is a medical matter warranting prompt evaluation, not another set.
