Sweat losses, especially sodium, are why plain water isn't always the whole answer after long, hot, or intense sessions: replacing fluid without electrolytes can leave clients feeling flat, foggy, or crampy despite "hydrating." The Food-First Answer
For most clients doing typical training, an ordinary well-built diet replenishes electrolytes without any products. Coach the pattern with familiar foods.
- Potassium: bananas, potatoes and sweet potatoes, beans, avocados, oranges, and leafy greens.
- Magnesium: nuts and seeds (pumpkin seeds and almonds especially), whole grains, dark leafy greens, and dark chocolate.
- Calcium: dairy and fortified alternatives, canned fish with bones, and greens like kale.

For continuous, intense efforts beyond 60 to 90 minutes, heavy sweating, hot environments, or multiple sessions in a day, electrolyte-and-carbohydrate drinks earn their place.
Teach clients to match the tool to the demand: a 45-minute lifting session and a two-hour summer trail run are different problems. Salty sweaters, the clients with white-crusted hats and stinging eyes, often benefit from more deliberate sodium replacement around big sessions.
Spotting Imbalance on the Gym Floor
Mild electrolyte shortfalls show up as muscle cramps, unusual fatigue, headaches, or lightheadedness during or after training, worth a hydration-and-food conversation. Simple frameworks stick: arrive hydrated (fluids with meals all day, urine pale-straw), sip during sessions per thirst, and after heavy-sweat sessions, pair fluids with a real meal containing salt, produce, and protein, that meal is an electrolyte protocol disguised as dinner.
