WHAT IS NCCA ACCREDIDATION?
The National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) is a nationally recognized third-party agency that accredits certification programs meeting rigorous standards. The NASM-CPT exam is NCCA-accredited, ensuring your certification is recognized and respected across the fitness industry and around the world.
IMPORTANT EXAM INFORMATION
Step 1: Confirm Your Eligibility
To sit for the NCCA Accredited Certification Exam, you’ll need:
- A high school diploma or GED
- Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification
- Current Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification
If you’re not yet CPR/AED certified, NASM offers a convenient online-only CPR/AED Certification powered by ASTI, available anytime during your course.
Step 2: Schedule Your Exam
The NASM Certified Personal Trainer Exam is proctored by PSI, the authorized testing provider. You can sit for this exam at one of their in-person testing facilities or online, through their remote proctor program. To schedule your exam, complete the following:
- Log in to your NASM Customer Portal.
- Select Learning > Exams > Available from the menu options.
- Select the Schedule button for the NASM Certified Personal Trainer Exam (CPT)
- You will then be directed to the PSI Proctor Candidate website where you will be able to begin the scheduling process.
Note: You will be required to schedule your exam appointment at least 24 hours in advance.
After successfully scheduling your exam, you will receive a confirmation email from PSI with your appointment details.

Step 3: Exam Day
On the day of your exam, you’ll need to show proof of a valid, current, government-issued photo ID and current, valid CPR/AED certification.
NASM Certified Personal Trainer Exam details:
- Questions: 120
- Time to Complete: 2 hours
- Passing Score: Scaled score of 70 or better
- Exam Window: Must be taken within 180 days of your date of purchase.
Step 4: After Your Exam
Within one business day of passing the exam, a Digital Certificate and a Digital Badge will become available in your Customer Portal. To download, save, or print your Digital Certificate:
- Log in
- Go to Credentials
- Select My Credentials
- Click View Certificate

If you do not pass the exam on your first attempt, don’t worry, there are retest options. You will first need to complete a waiting period before you can take the test again.
- If you fail to pass your exam on the first attempt, the retest waiting period is one week.
- If you fail to pass your exam on the second attempt, the retest waiting period is 30 days.
- If you fail to pass your exam on the third attempt or more, the retest waiting period is one year.
After the waiting period has passed, you can purchase a retest by calling NASM Member Services at 1-800-460-6276. A retest is also included with the CPT Premium Self-Study and CPT All-Inclusive programs.
