NASM/AFAA Certification Governing Board

The NASM/AFAA Certification Governing Board (NASM/AFAA CGB) operates independently to set policies for governance of the Certified Personal Trainer certification and the AFAA Certified Group Fitness Instructor. They have the responsibility of oversight over all certification and recertification decisions, including governance, eligibility standards and the development, administration and scoring of assessment instruments.

The NASM/AFAA CGB is responsible for the following:

  • Adopting certification program policies and procedures
  • Adopting its own rules of procedure
  • Approving the certification exam content outline (also known as blueprint)
  • Approving the Code of Professional Conduct
  • Approving appointments to exam review committees and acting on their recommendations
  • Appointing a Disciplinary and Appeals Committee
  • Electing successors to the Board
  • Appointing ad hoc committees as necessary

There are occasional vacancies on the NASM/AFAA CGB due to resignation and expiration of elected terms of members. If you have an interest in serving as a member of the NASM/AFAA CGB we invite your review of the Overview of NASM/AFAA Certification Governing Board Responsibilities which includes application information.
