Calabasas, Calif. (November 12, 2009)—The National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), a global leader in personal training certification and sports performance training, today announced its Lead Organization membership of the National Coalition for Promoting Physical Activity (NCPPA).

“The creation of an executable National Physical Activity Plan (NPAP) could not have come at a better time,” said Dr. Micheal Clark, NASM chief executive officer.  “As the instances of chronic disease and obesity continue to rise, we are pleased to contribute to the creation of the NPAP and now look forward to joining NCPPA and its partners in developing implementation strategies that make this historic National Physical Activity Plan a reality for all Americans.”

The NCPPA is a coalition of diverse organizations who advocate for national initiatives that encourage Americans of all ages to become more physically active.  It strives to implement policy changes that make communities more conducive to physical activity on a local, state and national level.  Through its strategic partnerships, the NCPPA and its Lead Organization partners will implement the NPAP that is based on the Federal Governments Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans (2008).  The NPAP is comprised of evidence-based solutions that promote increased physical activity, combat preventable chronic disease and obesity, and incorporates the promotion of physical activity in healthcare and education reform measures.

“Today more than 60 percent of Americans do not engage in the levels of physical activity that could bring them important health benefits,” said Shelia Franklin, NCPPA Executive Director.  “Thanks to Lead Organization members such as NASM, the successful implementation of the NPAP will be key in combating the increasing number of Americans suffering from chronic disease and obesity.”

Through its sponsorship, NASM will actively work with NCPPA and its partners in the crucial assimilation of the NPAP into communities across the nation.  Representing NASM on the NCPPA committee is Alan Russell, MS, ATC, PES, CES, NASM CPT and NASM’s Director of Academic and Government Affairs.
