Calabasas, Calif. (October 22, 2009)—The National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), a global leader in personal training certification and sports performance training, today announced its Organizational Partner sponsorship of the National Physical Activity Plan (NPAP).

“NASM is pleased to join NPAP and its organizational partners in creating an executable plan for promoting physical activity,” said Dr. Micheal Clark, NASM chief executive officer.  “In a time when American’s sit more and move less, such a plan is needed to combat the contributors of chronic disease.”

Using the Federal Government’s Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans (2008) as its foundation, the committee is tasked with creating an applicable evidence-based plan to increase physical activity.  NPAP and its committee members will focus on eight key sectors for a successful implementation of the plan.  These sectors include public health agencies; education institutions; volunteer and nonprofit organizations; transportation, urban design and community planning agencies; mass media outlets; healthcare programs; business and industry worksites; and parks, recreation, fitness and sports programs.

“NPAP is extremely thankful to its organizational partners, such as NASM, for their support,” said Russell Pate, Chair of NPAP’s coordinating committee.  “National plans have been undertaken with considerable success in other countries.  With the prevalence of and rising healthcare costs related to chronic disease, including obesity, it is evident that the time has come for the US to adopt a national plan as well.”

Through its sponsorship, NASM will offer valuable insight and recommendations for shaping the plan.  Representing NASM on the NPAP committee will be Alan Russell, MS, ATC, PES, CES, NASM CPT and NASM’s Director of Academic and Government Affairs.

The next committee meeting is scheduled October 27 and 28 in Washington D.C.  To learn more visit www.physicalactivityplan.org.
