ASHS Master of Science in Human Movement

ATSUThe Human Movement program is a partnership program between ATSU-ASHS and NASM. This program is geared to assist students in the development of comprehensive knowledge of human movement science, functional anatomy, physiology and kinesiology, as well as functional assessment and program design and will prepare individuals to obtain certification as a Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES) or Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES) through the NASM.

Completion of this degree will serve as a valuable source of credibility to sports professionals, club owners, coaches and fitness department managers. It will also assist such sports medicine, exercise and fitness professionals in enhancing their knowledge, skills and abilities relating to the design and maintenance of exercise programs for various populations. When done properly, exercise training can have valuable benefits ranging from general health to elite sports performance. This program will serve as a means of assisting professionals in the appropriate design and implementation of exercise programs for various outcomes.

This program includes a one week residency course which will include presentations and lab-based interactions between students, faculty and leading professionals in health and fitness. This course is required for graduation and will be offered annually during the spring quarter.

Points of Distinctiveness
This is a post-professional program requiring prospective students to have at least two years of working experience in a profession related to human movement.

Through collaboration with NASM®, a leading worldwide organization in exercise, health and fitness, students will learn from leaders in the field, developing innovative ideas to address challenges facing society.

This distance education program enables individuals seeking an advanced degree and cutting-edge information to achieve their goals without leaving full-time employment or relocating to the site of the degree program. It is a flexible and effective educational program that will assist professionals in advancing their knowledge and careers.

Admission Requirements
The Human Movement (M.S.) program will admit human movement, health and fitness, and healthcare professionals with diverse graduate education, work history, and life experiences who have demonstrated capacity to pursue a rigorous course of graduate study and increasingly responsible positions in health, fitness and healthcare.

Prospective Human Movement (M.S.) students are selected by considering the overall qualities of the applicant through application content, academic record, prior experience, letters of evaluation and personal motivation. In special circumstances, a personal interview may be required.

Requirements

  • Candidates accepted for admission to the Human Movement (M.S.) program will have earned a bachelor's or master's degree prior to enrollment from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Candidates must be a health, wellness, or fitness professional with at least two years of professional experience ----OR---- be a licensed or certified fitness/personal training professional (NASM CPT, NSCA CPT or CSCS, ACSM CPT or Health/Fitness Instructor, Cooper Clinic, etc.), or healthcare professional (ATC, PT, DC, OT, PA, RN, RD, etc.).
  • Candidates must have achieved a minimum 2.50 program GPA (on a 4.0 scale).
  • Candidates are expected to be computer literate and experienced in word processing. All curricula require extensive computer usage. Accepted applicants are required to have a personal computer prior to matriculation and have access to a high-speed internet connection.
  • Candidates must submit an application form.
  • Candidates must identify references from: 1) a present or former faculty member, academic advisor, or employer, and 2) a human movement/healthcare professional. Letters from an educational consulting service will not qualify.
  • Applicants must provide official transcripts from all educational institutions where they have been awarded a degree.
