James McKenzie, CPA

President & Chief Operating Officer

James McKenzie serves as the president and chief operating officer for the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), the global leader in personal training certification and sports performance training. In his role, McKenzie oversees all business operations related to sales, marketing, information technology, finance, legal, and human resource functions. McKenzie is also responsible for NASM’s relationships with accrediting certification boards and government affairs. Tasked with ensuring the seamless operations of NASM's day-to-day functions, he stays focused on integrating the company's mission and vision into its long-term strategies and goals. Since joining NASM in April 2005, McKenzie has played an integral role in more than doubling the company’s revenue during his four-year tenure.

Prior to joining NASM, McKenzie was a principal and senior management team member of Spectrem Group, based in Westlake Village, Calif. At Spectrum Group, he managed multi-faceted mergers and acquisitions, and provided clients with strategic consulting and industry research analysis. In 2002, McKenzie played an instrumental role in the successful sale of this company. His background also includes experience in diverse corporate environments, managing financial and business administrative functions including directing treasury and banking operations, accounting, taxes, human resources, employee benefit programs and corporate risk management.

McKenzie is a graduate of the University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Commerce in Charlottesville, holding a bachelor’s degree in commerce. He is a certified public accountant and member of the California Society of Certified Public Accountants. McKenzie currently resides in West Lake Village, Calif. with his wife Mary Ann and his three children. He is also a member of the board of directors at Louisville High School and an avid golfer.
