Director, Marketing & Communications

As the director of marketing and communications at the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), Bill Staples is responsible for the advertising, marketing and communications efforts to support NASM’s business development and educational activities.

Prior to joining NASM in August 2006, Staples led the marketing team for Health Services Advisory Group, a $25 million healthcare-consulting firm that serves as the Medicare quality improvement organization (QIO) of Arizona. QIO educates healthcare providers in physician offices, hospitals, and long-term care settings on the adoption of health information technology, redesigning processes, and improving organizational culture. Staples’ first healthcare marketing and communications role was in 1995 with the Texas Medical Foundation.

From 2000 to 2003, Staples served as a senior member of the global advertising, marketing and communications team at EDS, a $22 billion, Fortune 100 information technology services company in Plano, Texas. At EDS, Staples was responsible for online strategy, implementation, and marketing integration of eds.com, the corporate Web site. During his tenure with EDS, eds.com received numerous awards, including the International Business Award Winner, Best Home Page; Site IQ Index, Top Web Site in the IT Services Industry; and Top 200 B2B Web Sites, B2B Magazine. He also was a member of the EDS MBA Think Tank and EDS Education Outreach Governance Board.

Staples has a passion for sports, especially baseball. He is a member of the board of directors of with the Nisei Baseball Research Project, a non-profit organization founded to preserve the history of Japanese-American baseball. As a baseball historian, author, and researcher, Staples has collaborated with the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, presented at the Symposium on Baseball and American Culture at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y, and contributed to mlb.com.

In 2006, he was recognized by The Business Journal of Phoenix as one of the 40 Under 40 up-and-coming business and community leaders in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area, and currently serves on the Parks and Recreation Board for the City of Chandler, Ariz.

Staples earned a bachelor of arts degree from the University of North Texas, a Master of Business Administration from Arizona State University, and certification from the Center for Bilingual and Multicultural Studies in Cuernavaca, Mexico.
